The message that is being conveyed is that of complete solitude and loss. The man has lost the shirt off his back, and the shoes off of his feet. The pale caress of death is on his skin, and regardless of whether he is a dead or still alive, it looks like he has let go, but is hardly at peace. He is a ghostly figure. No, I think he has given up. He let himself lie on the cold ground. The ground is what is light, he is surrounded by darkness, except for light patches in the darkness that look like they are refracted off of the ground. They look like falling ashes. As if his whole life was burned up and floats in the darkness above him. Yet he is illuminated, despite the fact that he is in surrounded by darkness. Perhaps his final act of defiance against the darkness was to burn his life (thus the ashes remain), and then to lie in the light. The man is alone. There is no one with him, and nothing but dirt and ash in his environment. Maybe that is what we all are. All human beings are alone, and we are all surrounded by the ashes and darkness of our lives, as we lie in the dirt of our environment. We are all dead, basking in the light of the moldering ashes of our burnt up possessions.
My first idea to this picture was that the snow is covering him and eventually he will be forgotten. Once the snow covers him no one will be able to tell that this man ever existed. From the way he is laying, I don't think he's dead. As Beth said, I think he's given up and he wants the snow to cover him and to be forgotten. His position portrays a way of acceptance and he's letting the world around him do what he wants but he's going to lie there and let it happen. He's done trying and he just wants to lie there and let everything happen around him because he can't make a difference anymore. He seems to be beaten down and he looks wore so he's done trying and failing, I guess, and he's ready to stop doing that and just be forgotten. The background is dark so there's the idea that there are no possibilities for him to do anything to make a difference. He's just sees darkness and there's no way to escape where he is at that moment. He can't see anything changing and he's stuck in that moment so he just lies down and gives up. His surroundings and him are worn out so maybe he's tried to make a difference and get out of where he is now but it didn't work so now he's left in that moment and he just accepts it.
